James Sutherland recalls his wife Mary, who died three years ago. He is sure that she is waiting for him, as she said, in their house in Connecticut. He drives there, but the police are waiting for him. He tries to explain that he is not a criminal, but no one listens to him. He is taken to the police station, where he is completely at the mercy of the police. He is beaten and then forced to write a confession stating that he killed his wife. He writes it, but the police do not believe him. Then he agrees to sign a paper in which he confesses to murdering his wife, while also forfeiting his inheritance rights. The police release him, and he returns home. He realizes he has been deceived, but he cannot prove anything. He reads and rereads his diary over and over, trying to find some proof in it that he is not a murderer. But the diary is nowhere to be found. Then he realizes that his wife was murdered. He tries to find her killer, but cannot. Then he decides to take revenge. He hires two gangsters to kill him. They come to his house, but he kills them instead.
