Game of Thrones is an American medieval fantasy television series created for HBO by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss.
It is based on A Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin's best-selling series of seven fantasy novels, the first of which is titled A Game of Thrones. The show primarily filmed on a soundstage at Paint Hall Studios in Belfast, Northern Ireland. But locations in Belfast, Malta, Croatia and Iceland doubled for the natural world of Martin's Seven Kingdoms of Westeros.
The first season of the series debuted in the U.S. on April 17, 2011. Two days later, it was picked up for a second season, which started airing on April 1, 2012. According to the Belfast Telegraph, in March 2012, HBO ordered the production of a third and fourth season, which are to cover the third novel in the series, A Storm of Swords, and which are to be filmed concurrently in Northern Ireland from June 2012 to about February 2013.
Highly anticipated since its early stages of development, Game of Thrones was very well received by viewers and critics. Its first season was nominated for several awards, including Outstanding Drama Series for the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards and Best Television Series – Drama at the 69th Golden Globe Awards; Peter Dinklage also won both ceremonies' Best Supporting Actor award (Emmy and Golden Globes). Other accolades include an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series and an Emmy win for Outstanding Main Title Design.
The cable television series closely follows the multiple storylines of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, and author Martin has stated that the show's pilot script was very faithful to his work.
