Two half steps make a whole step. Since the half steps occur between the 3rd and 4th and the 7th and 8th notes of a major scale, then 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 4 to 5, 5 to 6, and 6 to 7 are whole steps. When the half step between the 3rd & 4th, 7th & 8th rule is applied with the remaining notes of the major scale seperated by a whole step, a major scale can be constructed from each note of the scale.
Therefore, when the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th notes of the C major scale are sounded together producing a major 7th chord in the key of C, using the major sclae half step, whole rule, build major 7th chords from the 11 remaining notes of the scale. This is called transportation.
